In modern sports broadcasting and officiating, VAR teams often operate from a dedicated Video Operation Room. The VOR may be located within the sports arena or at a remote centralized location. Regardless of its position, the VOR staff must maintain reliable, swift, and straightforward communication with multiple parties: on-field referees, the League or Federation organizing the event, and the OB van responsible for the sports broadcasting. Numerous intercom solutions from various manufacturers on the market address this need.

Based on the direct and extensive collaboration with VAR teams for many years, SLOMO.TV has developed a new system specifically designed for small teams and VOR communication: the Bluetooth Intercom. This new device builds on the experience with our existing VAR intercom solution — the SLS Intercom, which is embedded directly into the videoReferee® VAR server.

TheBluetooth Intercom offers a robust set of features that improves coordination and flexibility in a professional sports environment for small teams, all while being cost-effective and easy to implement. The device itself is compact and light, fitting into any VOR environment.

Features offered by the Bluetooth Intercom include:

1. Advanced audio matrixing and routing

The device provides comprehensive capabilities for audio matrixing and user routing, matching the functionality of established intercom platforms. It supports multiple communication modes and enables the creation of custom modes for user groups, ensuring that each team configuration can be tailored to specific operational requirements. The optimized interface makes configuration simple and intuitive.

2. Universal headset compatibility

The intercom is compatible with a wide range of headsets: classic analog models, USB headsets, and wireless Bluetooth devices. This versatility allows users to select equipment based on individual preferences and operational needs. The availability of analog and USB connections serves as a fail-safe: if wireless connectivity encounters issues, wired communication remains uninterrupted. In total, the system includes four embedded Bluetooth interfaces, designed to support the four primary team members who require frequent unrestricted movement during the event.

3. Seamless system integration

Integration with existing infrastructure is carried out through the standard DANTE interface, enabling connection to other intercom systems. Compatibility with Vokkero further simplifies incorporation into current workflows. Bluetooth Intercom is designed to reduce setup complexity and minimize disruption to established processes.

4. SIP client functionality

The integrated software allows the Bluetooth Intercom to operate as a SIP client over the Internet, significantly expanding its utility. This feature enables direct connection to IP phones – for example, in a League's administration or the Federation’s remote office. It can also be used to create a SIP account with an assigned incoming phone number for the device, which can be connected to incoming calls from mobile devices. This feature enables the Bluetooth Intercom to adapt to various external communication scenarios, ensuring smooth and flexible coordination with staff located outside the VOR.

5. Intuitive user interface

A 7-inch high-resolution touch screen serves as the main control panel. The display presents all system communication settings and allows for real-time adjustments. Users can configure the system and connected headsets to meet the requirements of the specific task. For example, the audio from on-field communication can be set at 30–40% volume for all referees' headsets as a background, while a specific staff member can monitor the same audio feed at 100% volume.

6. VAR system interface

The intercom includes a dedicated interface for integration with VAR systems. An important feature is included: when the red referee button is pressed by the user, the user’s microphone is automatically and instantly connected to the wireless intercom. This ensures quick response during critical moments and synergy between communication and video review processes. Of course, the device is also fully integrated with SLOMO.TV's videoReferee® VAR servers.

7. Built-in recording

All conversations are recorded by an integrated system, providing valuable data for post-event review, League or Federation oversight, and training purposes.

8. Redundant power management

Reliability management is delivered through the option to connect a redundant power supply. The device features two power ports, allowing connection to two independent power sources. In the event of a power failure, the Bluetooth Intercom can continue normal operation when connected to an uninterruptible power supply, ensuring stable communication during critical phases of the event.
