Video refereeing and video broadcasting require active communication between team members to ensure smooth operation.
In video refereeing, effective communication is achieved through the use of an external intercom system that can be installed in a VOR, OB van, or VAR center. The challenge with using external intercoms is that they need to be reliably integrated into the VAR system and the overall communications network in order to function effectively while recording conversations.
Similarly, for TV crews, continuous live communication is an integral part of the workflow, especially in multi-channel productions. The Replay Operator (RO) coordinates with many staff members, including directors, engineers, camera operators, and other ROs. However, standard broadcast intercom solutions typically cannot provide additional functionality in a comprehensive system.
SLS Intercom for VAR
To simplify the communication system and reduce the number of video production system components, SLOMO.TV developed SLS Intercom, a communication subsystem that can be embedded directly into the videoReferee® server.
The benefits of the SLOMO.TV intercom option for VAR systems:
- Fewer external components make the solution more economical. Also, the reliability of the integrated system is increased.
- Any USB or wireless Bluetooth headset is compatible with the system – both specialized professional intercom headsets and much more affordable and widely available basic computer headsets can be used. Moreover, VAR team members can use their own personal headset, which is particularly important in a post-pandemic world, as personal equipment is more hygienic and secure.
- Up to 16 intercom users, both internal and external, can be connected to the SLS Intercom. A configurable, user-controlled intercom matrix allows groups of users to be arranged in a variety of interaction scenarios and switched quickly, just as in other high-end intercom systems.
One of the built-in intercom system controls is the red referee button included in the basic configuration of the videoReferee® server. In accordance with international officiating protocol, the VAR team can only communicate with the referee on the pitch by holding down the red referee button.
The SLS Intercom's direct connection to the venue’s audio information system allows the referee on the pitch to make independent announcements in the arena.
The videoReferee® server and SLS Intercom can also be connected to a remote workplace, to make hybrid VAR solutions even more practical. Furthermore, the SLS Intercom allows users to connect to the situation room and VAR center directly via the server.
The SLS Intercom can be used not only in football, but also in hockey, basketball, and other sports, where a video refereeing system is used.
SLS Intercom for multi-channel recording and replay servers
Considering the importance of multifunctional intercom equipment not only in video refereeing, but also in regular TV production, SLOMO.TV launches SLS Intercom for its broadcast servers, a fully integrated system that covers both communication and audio management tasks.
SLS Intercom for multichannel replay servers not only provides a means of communication, but also allows users to hear the audio of the server recording, for example when editing and marking up video, adjusting various audio tracks, or switching between different modes. The user can select the audio feeds to listen to and set up their volume using the dedicated SLS Intercom control panel.
For example, you can increase the sound volume of the video system while reducing the volume of communication between production team using headsets connected through the intercom server.
Remote workplaces can also be connected to the intercom via the internet. Multiple independent replay operators can be remotely connected to the on-set server.
SLS Intercom benefits
Typically, intercoms are external systems that are dependent on a lot of third-party equipment for operation. Meanwhile, SLS Intercom requires no additional installation costs or time to set up as it is already built into the SLOMO.TV servers.
If it is still necessary to connect an external intercom system, this can be done either via standard analog connections or via the DANTE network audio interface on a SLOMO.TV server. Multiple SLOMO.TV servers can be networked using the common audio communication matrix.
The built-in intercom option for the SLOMO.TV systems is the perfect solution for sports organizations and broadcasting crews that want to get the ultimate functionality from one server without using external systems.
Save resources and improve the audio and communication workflow with the new SLOMO.TV integrated intercom option!
